Treading Grapes
From a woodcut found in a 14th century German calendar, this harvest scene illustrated the month of September. Before the invention of the printing press, woodcut prints like this were produced by prominent studios throughout Europe and included in the popular literature of the day. Found in calendars, treatises, romance novels and manuals, the prints were often coloured by either the bookseller or the buyer. This early form of “genre” art gives us an intimate view of everyday life in the medieval world.
