Siena's main square Piazza del Campo is shaped like a shell; it is a stunning medieval space surrounded by once luxurious palaces and crowned with the Palazzo Pubblico. Narrow streets and archways radiate from the centre to each of the contradas beyond and leading to all parts of the walled city. All of Siena gathers here to watch the pigeons, lounge on the patterned bricks and enjoy the open air cafes. Proud parents bring their toddlers and teach them to walk in their first pair of Italian leather booties.
